Unreleased early track by Daft Punk to be part of Soma 20 years compilation
Soma CD95 is another compilation by Scottish famous label, celebrating 20 years of activity. There's a good chance you already own some (or most) or the 3CD compilation if you are fond of melodic techno, but there's one least one track you don't know as even people at Soma had forgotten it. Good news is that it's one from Daft Punk early times. Drive was supposed to be part of the Rollin and Scratchin EP but was replaced by Da Funk track. This 1994 track has been found on a DAT when looking for rarities, and will be part of the compilation to be issued on September 19th. Unfortunately, no preview of the track is yet available.
“In amongst the hiss and crackle, the most monstrous 909 kick drum thudded. Daft Punk’s Drive track had been rediscovered. Playing through was Live Daft Punk; freaky vocals, pounding Roland drums & synths and that archetypal DP compression. After standing in silence, witnessing this moment, the track faded off and we heard the sound of the French spoken word that the recording had been made over; the remnants of their parents audio collection. The tape had originally been sent with Rollin’ and Scratchin’ to be released as Soma25. But Soma asked these two bright-eyed and Techno-bound Frenchman, to finish and send Da Funk to accompany Rollin’ and Scratchin’ and DRIVE was shelved for a later date…“
