Awakenings: best european techno festival ?
If you've been into electronic music for years, you know that June has traditionally been the month for one of the best electronic music festivals in Europe with the Sonar in Barcelona, Spain. Critically acclaimed but also a destination for many party goers, Sonar was on the map and schedule of the summer festivals you don't want to miss. It's also been the main influence of more recent Nuits Sonores festival in Lyon, France. But lately, Awakenings festival, Netherlands, has gained much traction among the techno festival community with its 8 stages and a long line-up of world-class techno DJs and producers.
Awakenings is a TECHNO festival, not an electronic music festival. You can't expect some house, electro-house or Trance DJs, it's fully focused on techno and its subgenres (whether it be minimal, Detroit, ...) with very rare exceptions (Joris Voorn). Don't expect to be able to purchase a tickets a few weeks before festival either, no matter the price (€50 this year for one day), it's usually sold out in a few weeks (if not days). Nothing strange about it when you have a look at the line-up: Laurent Garnier, Ricardo Villalobos, Pantha du Prince, Luciano, Jeff Mills, James Holden, Dave Clarke, Speedy J, Joris Voorn, Âme, Adam Beyer, Marco Carola, Chris Liebing, Ben Klock, Derrick May, Luke Slater, Paul Ritch, Len Faki, DJ Rush, Ida Engberg, Ben Sims, Reboot, Mathias Kaden, Kevin Saunderson, Henrik Schwarz, Luke Abbott, 2000 and One, Marcel Dettman, Seth Troxler... to name only a few. Do the math.
